Traders at Eke-Awka market alongside their customers appear to
presently pay little or no attention to COVID-19 safety protocols as
directed by Anambra state government and Nigeria Centre for Disease
Control, NCDC.
This was observed when ABS crew monitored level of compliance to
COVID-19 protocols by the Eke-Awka traders and their customers.

Correspondent, Emmanuel Okonkwo reports that during the monitoring exercise, it was noticed that virtually all the
people in the market are not wearing their face masks, while the few
who have theirs were either wearing it on the chin or holding it in
their hands.
However, all shops in the market still have hand washing materials
stationed at the entrances.

In an interview, the Chairman COVID-19 Taskforce for Awka South and
Eke-Awka market, Mr Charles Obuekwe who debunked rumour that they now extort from their victims instead of doing their job, assured that he
will severely punish any of the COVID-19 taskforce in the market
caught in such illegal act.
He called on traders and buyers in the market to continue to abide by
the COVID-19 laws, as anyone caught by officials of the market’s
COVID-19 taskforce would be subjected to all punishments meant for
defaulters of the law.

 Â
For a member of the market’s COVID-19 taskforce, Mr Chijioke Okoli,
they were faced with a lot of challenges in enforcing the facemasks
law in the market, as he said, many of the defaulters claim to be
above the law especially security personnel among them.
Also speaking, a buyer, Mr Uzochukwu Azobandu who was properly wearing his mask, said it is necessary for people to continue to obey all the
COVID-19 protective measures for their safety, pointing out that the
deadly disease still exists.
