In a bid to give sound healthcare delivery to Ndi Anambra, The Anambra State government under the leadership of His Excellency Chief Dr. Willie Obiano, the Executive Governor of Anambra State, through
the State Ministry of Health has embarked on First ever State wide Mass Deworming and administration of Vitamin A to pre-school and School children. This is in an attempt to improve their nutritional status by reducing the worm loads which is known to positively impact on the growth of these children.
The exercise which is intended to deworm 2.5 million children will take off from 7th to 12th of December, 2016 in all the Primary and Junior Secondary Schools in the State. This is in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health and the Civil Society Organisations (PACIEH, GYEI and Meshi groups).
Addressing the press men in his Jerome UdorjiSecretariat officeAwka, the Hon. Commissioner for Health Dr. Joe Akabuike, said that these worms are group of parasites which are referred as Helminths and includes Schistosomesand soil transmitted Helminthis. Stating that the infections are among the most common infections and can impair nutritional status especially in children by causing internal bleeding which can lead to loss of iron and anaemia, malabsorption of nutrients, diarrhoea, loss of appetite and reduction in energy intake thereby affecting the growth and development of a child.
Applauding the State Government, Dr.Akabuike saidthat this exercise was first ever mass deworming done in the State for the Children, emphasising that at the end this exercise, the nutritional status and immunity of 80% of the children will be improved.
The Hon. Commissioner also advised Parents and caregivers to avail themselves of these opportunity and make sure that their Children or Wards are dewormed, ‘’ Regular deworming will reduce the rate of stunted growth in our children, try and engage yourselves in deworming your child periodically together with improving your water and sanitation’’he said.
