People living in riverine communities of Anambra State have been Implored to place greater emphasis on the safety of their lives than their property as they prepare to evacuate to higher grounds against the background of another impending flood disaster in Nigeria this year.
The Anambra State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA reiterated this clarion call at Achalla in Awka North local government Area as it intensifies its early warning interactive sensitization meeting for flood prone local government areas of the state.
Addressing stakeholders of Awka North, two Directors of SEMA, barrister Awande Onyejekwe and Chief Vincent Ezewizie assured them that the state government and the National emergency Management agency, NEMA, have made adequate arrangements to provide palliatives to ameliorate the plight of persons and families who might be adversely affected by the forecasted flood disaster.
Chief Ezewuzie and Barrister Onyejekwe also enjoined the people to cooperate with SEMA to ensure that no life would be lost during the forthcoming deluge.
They however noted that the expected flooding this year might not be as dangerous as the 2012 flood disaster in the country.
Other resource persons who spoke to the stakeholders on measures to mitigate adverse effects of flooding were representatives of the Ministry of health and Civil Society Organizations.
The Traditional ruler of Ebenebe, Igwe Christopher Nnaegbuna and other stakeholders particularly from flood prone communities of Achalla, Oba-Ofemmili, Ebenebe, Ugbene and Ugbenu in Awka North as well as the Head of the Local Government Administration, Mr. Charles Chukwuma expressed gratitude to SEMA and Governor Willie Obiano for the sensitization programme, preparedness and assurance to come to their aids if the predicted deluge occurs.
