Revival of Igbo culture and tradition seems to be spreading like wildfire with many traditional rulers and prominent individuals across the state celebrating the New yam festival with passion and zeal.

Our correspondent was at the Iri Ji Okwoaka Amich, former commissioner for Information and culture, Chief maja Umeh in Amichi Nnewi South Council Area, report that the festive held in his compound, attracted notable personalities from all walks of life which include the clergy, traditional rulers titled men, top government functionaries, relatives as well as friends and well-wishers.
In a holy mass preceding the Iri Ji festival, the Bishop of Ahiara catholic Diocese, Most Reverend Peter Okpalaeke, said the essence of the gathering was to thank God for his provision to mankind noting that from foundation of the world, God designed that men through the labour of their hands will feed themselves and families hence the celebration of new yam which he said is the king of all crops.
In his remarks, Governor Willie Obiano represented by his special adviser on political matters, Honorable Chinedu Obidigwe described Anambra state as the food baskets of the nation and called on Ndi Anambra to support Governor Obiano’s blue print in agriculture to sustain food sufficiency.
In their separate speeches, the member representing Ogbaru one constituency in the state House of Assembly, Chief Benson Nwaulu and commissioner for Agriculture, Mr., Afam Mbanefo retreated Governor Obiano’s determination to take agriculture to an enviable height and advised Ndi Anambra to invest in agriculture to ensure the growth of the state economy .
The celebrant, Chief Umeh, in his comment, thanked God for a bountiful harvest in the state describing Yam as the greatest gift of God to mankind noting that the Iri Ji festival which is an annual event was one of the ways through which he contributes to the promotion of Igbo culture and tradition,
Cutting of Yam, various cultural displays paying of homage to the celebrant among other things featured at the new yam festival.
