A University lecturer, Dr. Lizzy Okoye of the Geology Department, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has called for early detection and prevention of erosion among the citizens and governments.
Dr. Okoye who is also the Acting Director of National Water Resources Capacity Network for South East was speaking in an ABS Interactive phone-in programme issues which dwelt on erosion and the environment.
She noted that lack of early prevention and proper channeling of flood water leads to gully erosion which is a very dangerous level of soil erosion.
In his submission, another guest in the programme, Dr. Emma Ezenwaji of the Geography and meteorology department, UNIZIK harped on the need for land use map and legal framework for erosion prevention, and management for early protection of the environment, particularly in Anambra state which presently has about seven hundred erosion sites.
Dr. Ezenwaji advocated for the provision of good drainage system for proper channeling of flood to avoid the wanton destruction of farm lands, houses and roads
Some callers into the programme including Reverend Father Cyprian Nwankwo from Umuawulu, and Chijioke from Orlu, Imo state among others called for ecosystem management, more sanitization and use of professionals
