Road infrastructure as one of the major dividends of democracy from the government to the governed has remained a mirror through which any government is assessed.
In line with the above statement, can one adjudge roads in the south East part of the country as a zone where government attention is felt.
For some months now, road users who ply Enugu -Onitsha express road, both through the express and old road, are counting their losses due to the deplorable condition of the roads.
ABS crew paid a visit to the Ugwuoba axis of the old road , and was met with a horrible sight as vehicles were either packed, broken down while some portions of the road were deserted.
At some point, the crew had to continue the journey on a motorcycle just as residents of the area do because the area was impassable for vehicles.
At the Ugwuoba express axis, the story was the same as it equally looked deserted as ABS gathered that commuters have resorted to using roads in hinter lands to save their vehicles.
However, Anambra State end of the roads are still in good shape following construction work done on the road by the state government.
Reacting to the development, a commercial bus driver Mr Sunday Mba, regretted that they spend more than three hours on the road instead of one hour and at times have to charge their passengers extra two hundred naira to enable them ply alternative routes.
A motorcyclist Mr Chibueze Inyi called on federal government to as a matter of urgency start work on the road to save people of the area and the road users, the trauma they go through in the hands of arm robbers who Catched in on the situation to deprive people of their personal belongings.
On his part, Chef Christian Nwankwo who expressed worry over the situation said federal government should do the needful and save people of the zone from the situation which he described as a nightmare.
Some passengers oga decried the quality time they spend on the road, wondering why the only federal road to most Eastern states will be allowed to degenerate to such level.
Meanwhile, the Umunya axis of the Onitsha end of the road has been a death trap for almost a year now inspite of all the palliative works done by the Anambra State government.
Commuters now ply Nteje road to connect Odumodu axis of the road, where they pay to pass through a poorly constructed bridge at Nteje, a situation which poses a threat to the lives of the road users.
