WRITTEN BY EMMA MADU
The sixth Anambra State House of Assembly was inaugurated on June 12, 2015, following the proclamation by Governor Willie Obiano.

At the inaugural sitting of the House, Honourable Barrister (Mrs.) Rita Obialunamma Maduagwu was unanimously elected as the Speaker. Her election was very peaceful and devoid of bickering and political turmoil which normally characterize such elections.
On assumption of office two years ago, the Speaker, Barrister Maduagwu, promised to lead an Assembly that would make and sustain positive impacts on the lives of Ndi Anambra, even as the lawmakers vowed to live up to the expectations of the people of the State by enacting laws and passing resolutions that would aid socio-economic development of the state.
Thus, the sixth Assembly, under the watch of Barrister Maduagwu as the Speaker, has witnessed considerable political calm and created congenial atmosphere for ensuring that peace and progress thrive in the state. The supportive role played by the present legislature has contributed in no small measure to the creditable performance of Governor Obiano. The lawmaker’s resolve to work harmoniously with the Governor is predicated on his genuine efforts to effect meaningful development in all sectors of the state economy.
The foundation for the phenomenal successes recorded by the present legislature so far was laid at the beginning of the session, two years ago, when just after three months of inauguration, the House passed an important bill on security of lives and property of Ndi Anambra, which today represents the highlights of the present  state government’s achievements. With the implementation of the security law, the citizenry now sleep with their two eyes closed, contrary to times before the Obiano administration when even traditional marriages were done outside the state for the fear of kidnappers and other related security challenges.
The achievements of the sixth State House of Assembly in terms of legislation and resolutions are numerous. The Laws and Resolutions are structured to address the socio-economic needs of the citizenry as well as the overall development of the state. Ninety-one resolutions and over twenty people-oriented bills were passed by the lawmakers within their two years in office.
Some of the passed bills are the Anambra State Housing Development Corporation Bill; Tourism and Hospitality Bill; 2016 Appropriation Bill; Mission Schools of Nursing and Midwifery Establishment Bill; Anambra State Waste Management Authority (ASWAMA) (Amendment) Bill and the Physical Planning Amendment Bill. Other bills passed by the present lawmakers include the Anambra state Health Insurance Bill; 2017 Appropriation Bill; Use of Bank POS for collection of Government Revenue Bill; Revenue Court Bill; the Ocha Brigade Bill and Public Procurement Amendment Bill.
Apart from the giant strides which the present lawmakers have made in the area of law making within the two years under review, they have also, in fulfillment of the constitution, done well in the execution of oversight function and constituency projects and empowerments. The lawmakers have been making judicious use of the constituency development fund for the development of the thirty constituencies in the state.
In recognition of the present lawmaker’s achievements in constituency projects and empowerment programmes in their constituencies, many Civil Society Organizations in the country have rated them high among their counterparts in that regard after thorough assessment. Most of the lawmakers have also received awards from many reputable National and International Organizations in recognition of their quality representation of their people. The height of the recognitions is the recent award of “Peace Ambassador” bestowed on the Speaker, Barrister Maduagwu by the International Peace Advocates, Demark.
The present State Legislature has been truly adjudged the most peaceful and successful among its counterparts in the country, considering the pedigree of the lawmakers as well as the numerous achievements it has recorded within the past two years. The legislature has maintained obvious transparency, accountability, prudence, hard work and competence in the discharge of its duties. These accomplishments would not have been possible without the active support of the staff of the legislature, especially in the general administration.
Since the sixth State House of Assembly has done well in all ramifications in the past two years through enactment of quality laws, effective representation as well as thorough oversight of government organs, the lawmakers humbly solicit collective prayer and support of Ndi Anambra to enable them continue to promote good governance in the state.
