The State government says it is committed to reducing drug abuse and trafficking in Secondary schools within the next one year.
Governor Willie Obiano stated this at a one day seminar on drug abuse and trafficking organized for teachers in Public Post Primary Schools across the State, in Awka.
Governor Obiano, who was represented by the Secretary to the State government, Professor Solo Chukwulobelu also directed the drafting of a Zero Tolerance Policy on Drug Abuse in Secondary schools.
He restated that his administration understands the negative effect of a drug infested society on security and development.
The Governor directed the State command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, to take the fight against drug trafficking and abuse to tertiary, primary and private institutions in the State to sustain the successes already recorded in the post primary school level.
On her part, the Chairman Post Primary Schools Service Commission, Lady Joy Ulasi, maintained that the partnership with NDLEA in schools are yielding positive results.
In an opening remark, the State Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Mr Sule Momodu who underscores the importance of the training commended the State government for its support to the fight.
Some teachers who participated in the seminar, Mr Godwin Nwobu from Government Technical College Onitsha and Dr Blessing Okoli from Community Secondary School, Agulu-Awka, said the seminar has opened their eyes to some grey areas about drug use and abuse.
The one day sensitization seminar which attracted more than one thousand teachers from public secondary schools across the State was initiated by the State Government in collaboration with the NDLEA to engage the teachers as partners in eradicating drug abuse in schools.
