The atmosphere at the Saint Philip’s Catholic Church Amakwa Ozubulu where a gun man attacked worshippers, was still moody and in a confused state,
as people could still be seen, late yesterday, standing in groups discussing the incident.
There were various accounts to the matter.
While one group says the shooter was one, others say they were three, or more than that.
According to Mr. Joel Obunadike, who lost his uncle and a brother’s wife to the shootings, the pain is unbearable.
The catechist of the parish, Mr.Calistus Ikeanumba, who was amongst the lucky survivors ,said he only heard the thunderous sound and hid in the sacristy.
Another survivor, Mr. Stephen Ohamadike, told the ABS that he was saying the second prayer of the faithful, when the shooting sporadically started, adding that he laid low inbetween two chairs which saved his life.
Some of those who assisted in carrying the dead and injured, Mr. Abuchi Udeaja and Mrs. Nkechi Okeke, narrated the horrifying experience and prayed that such would never happen in their community again.
It will be recalled that a seven month old baby was among the dead.
Giving a spiritual insight to the incident, Monsignor Hypolite Adigwe, said it is a sacrilege that must be atoned for via rededication, before the church can be used for Masses again.
Meanwhile, the Saint Philip’s Catholic church, Ozubulu has turned a pilgrimage centre as aspirants in the upcoming gubernatorial election in the state are all trying to score political points through visits to the church and hospitals, to see the injured.
