Women have been urged to get involved in active politics to attain higher political positions.
The Supervisory Councilor for Health in Idemili South Council Area Chief Dozie Mmaduabum made the call during a special forum in Oba.
While praising the achievements of women so far, Chief Mmaduabum said the women had strived to promote peace in communities and made investments in projects like building and renovation of schools, town halls, roads, rehabilitation and giving out loans and urged the women of the community to come out and participate in politics since many of them are literate and educated.
In a paper presentation, a Consultant Surgeon, Dr. Ifeanyi Anigbogu, lectured the women on the causes, prevention, symptoms and treatment of breast cancer.
Dr Anigbogu listed the major causes of breast cancer, which he described as a “silent killer”, to include, inhaling of chloro-fluro carbons from exhaust pipes of automobiles, eating of processed/canned foods, excessive heat as a result of depletion in the ozone layer, eating food crops cultivated with artificial fertilizers, and accumulation of synthetic drugs in the body.
He said the symptoms of breast cancer include, malignant lumps in the breasts, inner itching of the breasts as well as when a woman is lactating without nursing a child, observing of menstrual periods twice within a month and growth in armpits.
Dr Anigbogu said that cancer was preventable and could be managed if discovered during its 1st or 2nd stages of development and enjoined the women to check their breasts daily as they take their baths.
The Mobilizing Health Officer Idemili South LGA, Mrs Jane Okpala, also talked to the women to watch out for signs of menopause as they age as according to her, women start experiencing menopause from the age 45 to 50 when they begin to experience stops in their menstrual cycles and advised them to seek doctor’s advice during such times.
The highlights of the occasion were donations of 100 pieces of mosquito-treated nets for malaria prevention, about 500 pieces of metizan tablets for the prevention of river blindness and elephantiasis to the women by Chief Mmaduabum.
