WRITTEN BY MOSES IGWE
A king they say, is born not made because the crown of a king is in his heart, not head. Moreover, a hood does not make the monk.
Thus, the ancient city of Awka, the Smithland of modern civilization, will, on Saturday, December 30, 2017 host the cre’me de la cre’me, the middle class and even the hoi-poloi in the society to the triple events of the king of the town, His Majesty, Obi Dr. Gibson Nwosu OON, The Obi of Awka, Ezeuzu the second of Awka. The triple events are the 2017 Egwu Uzu Festival, the twentieth anniversary of coronation as well as the eightieth birthday of the humble but adorable monarch.
Indeed, his Majesty, Obi Dr. Gibson Nwosu is a rare specie. He is God’s gift to mankind, Nigeria, Anambra and Ndi Awka in particular. Born on April 26, 1937 in Awka to a business man Ozo Chukwuma and Madam Oyilidiya Nkunaru Nwosu of Isiagu Amikwo Awka, the little Nwabueze started his educational career at Eziana Nursery School, Ihiala, his maternal home. He also attended Saint Martin’s Primary School, Odoata Ihiala before proceeding to Bishop Shanahan College, Orlu where he obtained a premier grade Cambridge School Certificate. Obi Nwosu equally attended Saint Theresa’s College, Nsukka for his Advance School Certificate, which saw him into the famous Yaba College of Technology, Lagos, where he obtained HND in Mechanical Engineering.
On graduation, Obi Dr Gibson Nwosu worked briefly as Electrical/Mechanical Superintendent at the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Ebute Meta, Lagos before Joining the nucleus of Military Aviation Trainees that pioneered the Nigerian Air force in 1962. He was among the successful five out of the twenty-five thousand candidates that attended the interview for the plum job from the then Eastern part of Nigeria. Thereafter, the five, alongside others from other parts of Nigeria were flown to Canada and later Germany for training after which they came home to start the Nigeria Air force, in Kaduna.
Obi Nwosu, Ezeuzu the second of Awka has travelled to many countries in five continents of the world. In fact, it was while he was in Zambia where he sojourned as a refugee after the Biafran war, that he met his lovely wife, Nora. The marriage is blessed with four wonderful children and many grand children.
At the end of the war, His Majesty moved to Zambia, where the then President Kenneth Kaunda met and welcomed him. Eze Uzu was later appointed the Airport Commandant of Lusaka International Airport. He was later made Principal, Aviation Academy in Zambia, a post he held for 10 good years.
Back to Nigeria in 1985, Ezeuzu was appointed the first General Manager of Anambra State Environment Sanitation Authority (ASESA) and with the cleanliness experience in Zambia, he made Enugu the cleanest capital city in Nigeria then. When the new Anambra was created in 1991, Obi Nwosu relocated to Awka and was appointed the Chairman, Task Force on Urban Road until he became the President–General, Awka Development Union Nigeria, a position he held for two terms, metamorphosing into his ascendance to the throne as the Traditional Ruler of Awka Kingdom. He is a member of the prestigious Knight of Saint John International.
As a first class Traditional Ruler of distinction, Obi Dr. Gibson Nwosu was appointed by the federal Government as Chancellor, Usman Danfodio University, Sokoto and was awarded the National honour of OON. In Anambra, he is a member of the Anambra State Council of Traditional Rulers, an ex Vice Chairman of the Council and currently one of the patrons of the Council. Ezeuzu, since his reign twenty year ago, has taken Awka to the next level; level of prominence and excellence in the National Council of Traditional Rulers.
Above all, Awka has produced notable sons and daughters in various fields of human endeavour and can be rated one of the best communities in Africa in terms of academics, industry, black smiting, politics, merchandising, culture, trade and commerce. These are what detractors want to pull down overnight, joining the enemies of progress who are jealous of the rising status of Awka, through deceit, blatant lies, falsehood and uncharitable conduct. They want to push Awka into unnecessary tussle, anarchy, hatred, which was alien to Ndi Awka. The thirty-three villages in Awka are bonded, Ndu Awka are respected globally for their sincerity; they cannot commit abomination for money.
The Anambra Traditional Rulers Law provides for ways of choosing, installing and removing a traditional ruler and the Awka traditional rotational method, which has existed for centuries, also provides for ways of choosing a Monarch, if the seat becomes vacant. None of the rules says it must be through the highest bidder who bribes the people most or who fabricates the most hideous lies.
Despite this open provocation, Ndi Awka and indeed the general public are urged to remain peaceful and focused. The 2017 biennial Egwu Uzu festival of His Majesty, Obi Dr Gibson Nwabueze Nwosu, Eze Uzu the second is dedicated to Awka People. It will be tripartite in nature- the twentieth anniversary on the throne, Ezeuzu’s Birthday and Egwu Uzu proper.
All ndi Awka, ndi Anambra and all good people of Nigeria join hands in wishing His Majesty happy celebrations. Merry Xmas and Happy New Year.
