The Speaker, State House of Assembly, Barrister Rita Maduagwu has called on state Houses of Assembly to enact laws that will empower women to contribute in nation building.
The Speaker made the call during a programme tagged “Advocacy for active participation of women in politics and governance in South East”, held in Awka.
The workshop was organized by Idikacholu Women in Governance in collaboration with Department for International Development DFID.
Barrister Maduagwu who stressed the need for women to be encouraged to inject their human nature and tender disposition in order to sanitize the polity revealed that Anambra State House of Assembly under her watch has made good legislations aimed at improving the living standard of women and their status in the society .
She called on various communities in the South East Zone to abolish those obnoxious laws that hinder women’s participation in politics, even as she advised women to always accord their husbands total respect so that they could get their support and sponsorship to political positions.
The Speaker appealed to affluent individuals in the South East zone to sponsor women in the 2019 general election as the zone has women eminently qualified for political positions.
In her speech, the coordinator Idikacholu Women in Governance, South East Zone, Professor Mercy Anigbogu explained that the organization seeks to empower women to aspire for elective positions and also vote during election as it will help them in making better decisions and great welfare for themselves.
On her part, the Resident Electoral Commissioner INEC, Enugu State, Mr. Emeka Ononamadu who regretted that women’s participation in politics in the South East Zone is still poor, charged them to participate actively in politics stressing that when they are in government they could enact more laws that would address the plight of women in Nigeria, particularly the South East Zone.
In her address, the representative of the Department for International Development, DFID, Ijeoma Chukwuemeka said that the workshop serves as an opportunity for cross fertilization of ideas among stakeholders as it will afford various representatives present in the workshop the opportunity to understand why they have a role to play to ensure women succeed in their political ambition
