The Executive Secretary of the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, Chief Paul Odenigbo,
has stressed the importance of proactive measures to guard against adverse effects of impending disaster in flood prone communities this rainy season.
Â
Chief Odenigbo, made this observation during the “Early Warning Interactive Senitisation for Flood Prone Local Government Areas,” organised by SEMA for stakeholders in Awka North and Idemili South local government areas at Achalla and Ojoto respectively.
Â
The SEMA boss who was represented by an Executive Director in the Agency, Chief Cyril Agupugo, emphasised that in spite of the fact that the Obiano administration has established Emergency Shelters in all flood prone council areas in the state to accommodate and give succour to likely victims of the impending deluge, people living in such communities should on their own take preventive measures in order to minimize adverse effects of the disaster.
Â
He noted that excessive flooding is a natural disaster which can occur in any part of the world, pointing out that its negative consequences can be reduced if precautionary steps are taken by the government and the citizenry.
Â
On their parts, the caretaker Chairmen of Awka North and Idemili South local government areas, Messrs Emeka Uzoka and Don Unachukwu, pledged to cooperate with SEMA to mobilise and sensitise their people about the forecast of the Nigerian Meteorological Institute and Nigerian Hydrological Service Agency on imminent flooding as it would affect their vicinity.
Â
The Early Warning Interactive Sensitisation program was attended by traditional rulers and Town Union executives of concerned communities in the two local government areas.
