The rich cultural heritage of Nanka community in Orumba North Local Government Area was showcased over the weekend when the

Traditional Ruler of the town, Igwe Godwin Ezeilo performed this year’s New Yam festival in his palace at Ifite Nanka.

 

The event attracted some Traditional Rulers, cultural proponents, government functionaries, captains of industry, the religious among others.

 

Performing the ceremony, Igwe Ezeilo, called on government at all levels to always invest in agriculture to ensure food security in the country.

 

Igwe Ezeilo, while charging the youths to embrace farming to become self reliant, commended Governor Willie Obiano for all his efforts to transform the agricultural sector and called for its sustenance.

 

He called on Ndigbo to desist from acts capable of debasing their rich cultural heritage, describing culture as people’s way of life.

 

Earlier in a homely during an inter-denominational church service to herald the event, the Parish Priest of Saint Anthony’s Catholic Church Nanka, and Dean of Nanka Deanery, Reverend Father Christian Umeojilinnaka, described New yam festival as a medium through which Ndi Igbo appreciate God for a bountiful harvest.

 

In their various remarks, the State President of Ohaneze Ndi-Igbo, Chief Damian Okeke-Ogene, Professor Emeka Okoli, and Chief Osita Ezechukwu, observed that Ndi Igbo are now improving on their love for their culture and tradition and canvassed for joint efforts to preserve them.

Also speaking, Chiefs Aniazoka Zokas, Ngozi Izuehie, and Godwin Nwafor, who said that Ndigbo should go back to farming, which is part of their identity, urged the federal government to encourage mechanized agriculture as a way of attracting youths and ensuring food security.

 

The event featured lecture on how to avoid stress and its consequences, by Professor Bernice Ezeilo, inauguration of the new members of the Traditional Ruler’s cabinet, masquerade displays and cultural dance.
