Disagreements among the three sections of Umuchu community in Aguata Local Government Area marred the Town Union election scheduled for last Saturday.

The Umuchu Town hall witnessed a heavy presence of youths and adult males of the town who came for the proposed election.

A good number of men of Nigerian police were also seen by the ABS, obviously to ensure that there was no breakdown of law and other.

ABS also gathered that trouble started when a section of Amanasaa Quarter allegedly disrupted the accreditation process on the claims that some of the delegates from the area were disenfranchised.

Explaining the circumstances that led to the quagmire, the Chairman Caretaker committee Umuchu Development Union, Barrister Amos Ezejesi said that the Town Union election was due since 2016, but has lingered due to some issues from among the section whose turn it is to produce the President General.

He however said that his committee planned to use the first list submitted before the disagreement but the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Garba Umar directed the Town Union Caretaker Committee to settle the differences and fix a new date for the election for peace to prevail .

A member of the aggrieved Amanasaa section who is a Lecturer at University of Nigeria Nsukka, Engineer Arthur Osuloha maintained that they were in support of the directive from the Police Commissioner as they would not allow people of their area to be disenfranchised.

On his part, a community leader, Chief Anthony Otti who described the situation as unfortunate, regretted that the problems have denied them access to the forty million naira choose your project programme of the state government and opined that the elders and religious leaders from the community should come together and proffer lasting solution to the issues affecting the community to move it forward.

A representative of the traditional ruler of the community, Professor Echezona Ifejirika who is the Palace Secretary Umuchu Crystal Palace, noted that the Igwe in Council had tried severally to settle the problem but to no avail.

Representatives from the Ministry of Town Union Matters were present to observe the election which did not hold as the Chairman of the Caretaker Committee dismissed the gathering, pending when the issues would be resolved and a new date fixed.
