The State Government says it is determined to sustain various interventions aimed at mitigating effects of flooding in the riverrine areas of the state.
The Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Mike Okonkwo, stated this in Onitsha when he monitored refuse dumpsites and de-silting work at strategic locations within Onitsha metropolis.
Mr. Okonkwo , while describing flooding as inevitable natural disaster commended the present administration’s commitment towards ensuring that the state is prepared to tackle challenges arising from the menace.
He mentioned various interventions by the government to check flooding to include de-silting of blocked drainages in the state and removal of illegal structures .
According to him, other measures include sensitization of flooding-prone communities through combined efforts of SEMA and NEMA officials.
The Commissioner, disclosed that the state government has set up not less than twenty- eight holding centres for displaced persons across the state, where people could stay temporarily pending when the flood would recede.
While reiterating the importance of riding water channel of refuse, Mr. Okonkwo commended the effort of some volunteers who assisted the government to tackle issue arising from flood challenges.
