Commuters have been charged to respect other road users by adopting attitude of responsibility and sensibility while on road.
The founder, Kwapdas’ as Road Safety Demand Trust Fund, Justice Monica Dongban Mensem made the call during the 2018 Annual Conference and FRSC / NYSC Essay Competition Award held in Awka.
Speaking on the theme “the impact Of Social and Technological Distraction on pedestrian Safety in Nigeria”, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem who is the mother of the late Kwapdas Raugna killed in an accident by a hit and run vehicle, said that the Birth of Kwapdas as Road Safety Demand (KRSD) on 30th September, 2011 followed the death of her son Rangna Samson Dongban who was killed along Tudun Wada Road in Jos, Plateau State on 23rd September, 2011.
She explained that their Vision is to create healthy safe and secure road condition and practice for road users to bring down road crashes to barest minimum.
Justice Dongban Mensem explained that their mission is to educate and inculcate the habit of obedience to road ethics in drivers, ensure that quick response Units are established on the high way, and as well sustain public campaign to make road users support and accommodate each other.
In his address the Corp Marshal, FRSC, Dr Boboye Oyeyemi represented by the Assistant Corp Marshal Jonas Agu advised motorists to imbibe the right attitude while driving and advocated awareness and sensitization campaign using churches, Mosques, Motor parks, Markets, and road shows.
In their separate remarks the chairman of the occasion who is the immediate past Chairman of NUJ, Comrade Henry Nwasike and the Anambra state Coordinator Special Marshal, Barrister Ben Osaka frowned at people who have formed the habit of disobeying traffic rules and called on FRSC to always arrest and prosecute offenders.
Some discussants including Secretary Anambra State NCWS, Lady Sybil Nduka, the President, Nigerian Israeli Chambers of Commerce, Alhaji Sule ,Youths Corps members among others, noted that passengers have a big role to play by cautioning drivers against dangerous driving and called for rehabilitation of drug users before allowing them to drive on the high ways.
In a communiqué issued at the end of the program, the participants called for practical steps to be taken by the Federal and State Governents to provide safety tools like ambulance to facilitate prompt movement of accident victims to hospitals for treatment, even as they commended Kwapdas’as for championing the cause of safety in the country.
Presentations of Award certificates to Essay competition winners by Justice Dongban -Mensem and a minute silence observed in remembrances of Kwapdas Rangnas who was killed by yet to be identified motorist brought the conference to a close.
