The Federal Government has increased the penalty for gas flaring to two- dollars per a thousand Standard Cubic Feet, SCF, of gas, from ten naira per a thousand SCF of the commodity flared.
At the current exchange rate of three hundred and six point thirty five naira to a dollar, the two dollars penalty translates to six hundred and twelve point seven naira per a thousand SCF, while the zero point fifty dollars penalty translates to one hundred and fifty-three point one hundred and seventy-five per one thousand SCF.
In the gazetted ‘Flare Gas, (Prevention of Waste and Pollution) Regulations 2018,’ released, by the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources, the Federal Government also stipulated a fine of fifty
thousand naira or a six months jail term or both, for anyone who provides inaccurate flare data.
