The endless call for quality and affordable education for all would probably not be actualised if teachers; the integral purveyors of learning are neglected.
It is on that premise that stakeholders in Education converged on the Eagle Square, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, to celebrate teachers under this auspices of World Teachers Day.
This year’s theme is “The Right to Education Means the Right to a Qualified Teacher,”
The event attracted top personalities including President Muhammad Buhari represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Barrister Boss Mustapha.
President Buhari,in his speech noted that though the challenges in the Education sector in the country are glaring, the current government is focused on repositioning the sector
In his speech, the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, who agreed that there is great need to accord teachers due importance through adequate trainings and retraining programmes , urged the teachers to also make consious efforts towards self improvement to stand well equipped.
The representative of the Director General of the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO, Mrs. Ngozi Amanze, lamented the gap in education in the area of teachers’ availability and affordability to all, and assured the organization remains active in the drive to sustain educational supports across the globe.
On her part, the Anambra State Commissioner for Basic Education, Professor Kate Omenugha, commended the resourcefulness of Governor Willie Obiano towards educational growth in the state, and attributed the successes in that Sector to his visionary policies.
On the sidelines of the celebration, the 2018 President’s Teachers’ and Schools’ Excellence Award was given to teachers, school administrators, and schools that have demonstrated excellence in
education and education management over the past year, with Anambra State’s Mrs. Grace Ezenwa of Awada IV Primary School, Obosi taking home a brand new Hyundai Elantra for the Overall Best Administrator Category, in Nigeria, and Doctor Uju Ifegwuani, of Anglican Girls School Onitsha fourth position in that same area.
