International Day Of the Girl ChilId is a set aside by partners and stakeholders to advocate and draw attention to the pressing needs and opportunities for girls to attain skills.

Some residents of the state who spoke on the importance of the day called on government at all levels to take the issue of girl child protection very seriously by implementing existing laws.

The International Day of the Girl Child is celebrated globally to highlight and address challenges facing the female child.

The Day also seeks to promote girls’ empowerment and the fulfillment of their human rights.

Speaking on the celebration, the member representing Njikoka
Constituency Two at the Anambra State House of Assembly, Dr
Timothy Ifedioramma stated that it is essential to support and invest
in girls as well as eliminate the risks and deprivation they face.

He urged parents to endeavor to sensitize the girl child on sex
education for a better life.

The Traditional Ruler of Okpuno and Deputy Chairman, State Traditional
Rulers Council, Igwe Sunday Okafor, noted that the celebration will make way for the girl child’s life to be more interesting and enjoyable, noting that intensifying campaign for the girl child’s welfare will enable them get attention, proper training and encouragement.

On her part, the National Coordinator, Balm for the Bruised Foundation
and staff of ABS, Mrs. Ekwi Ajide, noted that a girl child can be abused sexually, intellectually, morally, socially and otherwise and therefore called on government and community leaders to consider the need for the girl child to be given attention and their rights protected so as to bring out the potential inherent in them.

On their parts, legal practitioners Miss Chisom Chude and Ngozi Asomadu, frowned at the level the girl child is underrated, molested,
denied opportunities, among others.
