The United Nation’s Disaster Assessment Coordination Team have concluded post disaster impact needs assessment of the flood situation in the State.
The Team led by Mr. James Brown paid a courtesy call on the state Deputy Governor, Dr. Nkem Okeke who is the Chairman of the State Emergency Management Agency Committee, to brief him on their findings and make recommendations.
Speaking with the team at the Government House, Awka, Deputy Governor Okeke who expressed concern over people’s sources of livelihood after the flood,
appreciated the team for the visit, lamenting that it has become annual reoccurrence in the Country.
The Deputy Governor suggested that having seen the devastation wrecked by the flood, their findings should be compiled with recommendations on how to prevent future flooding and to ensure that adequate preparations are made.
Deputy Governor Okeke disclosed that he spoke with the Vice President’s office who promised to provide money to traders among the flood displaced persons, stressing that the State is still in need of assistance.
Earlier, Mr. Brown said that their mission is to assess the State government’s response to the flood situation, and help where need be. Mr. Brown who noted that he has been in disaster management for over twenty five years in countries around the world, revealed that they have been supporting the SEMA and NEMA in information management, adding that he has produced a report, asking the State government to prepare a post disaster apparatus in the future, to ascertain people’s need as they start arriving their respective homes after any flood occurrence.
The Executive Secretary of State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, Chief Paul Odenigbo, pointed out that the team had been on ground since first October and had conducted scheduled meetings with concerned stakeholders including security personnel, among others, after which the report was compiled.
