The Umunya section of the Onitsha-Enugu Express Road, which for a very longtime has been in deplorable condition, received a face-lift as a result of the palliative work being carried out on the road by members of Nigeria Society of Engineers, Onitsha Branch.

At the Odumodu Umunya Junction, Caterpillars were seen loading sands on Tippers in a bid to make the Road passable for commuters and other Road Users.
The large deposit of sands at the centre of the High-way narrowed the entire Express Road, making vehicular Movement Impossible.
A  Members of the Nigeria society of Engineers Onitsha Branch, Mr. Victor Anaekwena, said they decided to contribute to the ongoing effort to make the Road useable by removing debris from the way as part of their community service, marking the commencement of the Nigeria society of Engineers week.
Another member of the Society, Mr. Chinedu Echedom, said the mountain of silt on that spot of the Express Road on the Umunya Axis, has caused accidents on daily basis and frequent breakdown of Heavy Trucks
conveying foodstuff and other materials into the state.
According to Mr. Echedom, the Economic activities of traders and other users of the express road have been adversely affected due to the frequent damage done to goods at that spot of the road.
A Resident, Chief Chinedu Ekwugha, expressed regret with the state of the road at Umunya Junction, noting that the constant breakdown of Trucks conveying fuel and other economic goods at that section of the
road has cost the lives of many people while goods worth millions of naira have been destroyed due to deplorable condition of the road.
A petty trader in the Area, Mr. John Obiadi, called on the state government to carry out minor repairs on the road to make it accessible for commuters, adding that since the road is a Federal Government responsibility , but situated in Anambra state, effort should be made to make it motorable for Ndi Anambra, who are usually the major
victims whenever accident occurs on the road.
Meanwhile, work is ongoing at the Nteje Bridge Bye-pass and when completed, will ease the heavy traffic at the Umunya section of the Onitsha Enugu Express Road.
