Ndi Anambra at home and in diaspora have been tasked to collaborate with the state government in its efforts towards making Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University a world class Institution for learning and research.
Governor Willie Obiano made the call during the ninth Convocation Ceremony of the University held at their Igbariam Campus,Anambra East Council Area.
According to the Governor, the Institution’s ninth Convocation is special to him because his wife was given an award, and secondly, because it falls on late Chief Odumegwu
Ojukwu’s post humous birthday month, stressing that Ndi Anambra should take up the challenge to write their names in gold.
The Governor, who added that education in Nigeria needs serious attention, enumerated some efforts of his administration in the
general development of education and the University in particular including advancements being made at the University’s medical school.
The new Chancellor of the University, and Ewi of Ado Ekiti, Dr Adeyemo Aladesanmi, spoke extensively on ways to upgrade the Country’s quality of education and called for adequate funding of the sector.
Professor Greg Nwakobi who is the Acting Vice Chancellor of the Institution, appreciated the State government’s presence in the school under Governor Obiano, including regular payment of their subvention,
and advocated employment of teaching and non-teaching staff as they are short staffed.
Chief Anthony Enukeme who was presented with an honorary Doctorate Degree in letters, appreciated the University for the honour and said that it will spur him for greater accomplishments.
The Wife of the Governor, Chief Ebelechukwu Obiano, among others were also given awards by the University Council.
The Governor had on arrival commissioned a twin one storey female hostel building built and donated by the Central Bank of Nigeria.
The Speaker of the State House Assembly, Barrister Rita Maduagwu, Traditional Rulers led by Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe, Ernest Obiejesi, Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, the academia, staff and students, among others were in attendance.
