World Day Of Remembrance For Road Traffic Victims usually takes place on third Sunday in every November to acknowledge victims of road crashes and their families.
It was started by the British Road Crash Victim Charity, and was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2005.
Since the adoption of the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic
Victims, pursuant to General Assembly resolution, the observance has spread to a growing number of countries on every continent.
The Day has become an important tool in global efforts to reduce road casualties and equally offer an opportunity for drawing attention to the scale of emotional and economic devastation caused by road crashes and to recognize the suffering of road crash victims, the work of support and rescue services.
Speaking on the importance of the day, the Anambra State Sector Commander of the Federal Road safety Corps Mr. Sunday Ajayi said that the purpose of the day is also to appreciate those that have provided
emergency services for the survival of road traffic victims.
While assuring that the celebration will bring to light the menace of road crashes and the burdens victims and their families experience,
Mr. Ajayi noted that the day is to underscore some negligent attitudes of road users and appealed to motorists to imbibe the culture of
Safety on the road by obeying traffic laws in order to reduce road crashes.
