State government has restated determination towards providing quality and
standard roads across the state.
The Commissioner for Works, Engineer Marcel Ifejiofor, stated this during the maiden annual conference and Annual General meeting of the Nigerian Institution of Highway And Transportation Engineers, Awka
chapter,held at the Ministry of Works , Awka.
The Nigerian Institution of Highway And Transportation Engineers is a division of The Nigeria Society of Engineers, Awka chapter.
Engineer Ifejiofor expressed satisfaction that professionals have taken their rightful positions in the scheme of affairs in the state,
through the instrumentality of Governor Willie Obiano, who appointed an Engineer as the Commissioner for Works and made it clear that the body ĺhas zero tolerance for
substandard roads.
Engineer Ifejiofor called on the young engineers to listen with keen interest to the lectures to be delivered so that they can give the people the best .
On his part, the Managing Director Anambra State Road Maintainace Agency, Engineer Emeka Okoye, urged Engineers to be professional while discharging their duties, as he said, that the event will refresh their minds on certain professional steps involved in their jobs.
In an opening speech, the chairman on the occasion, Engineer Joe Onyejekwe, said the event is apt as it will address many issues
affecting road infrastructure in the country , even as he said, that road infrastructure is the most viable feat to be achieved in every
democracy.
In a paper presentation, a Guest Lecturer, Dr Pius Aghamelu who dwelt on “sustainability of road infrastructure in Anambra state:
impacts from soil gullibility and erosion,” said that Anambra is the most erosion affected state in the country with Nanka in Orumba North Council area as the worst hit, saying that proper channelisation of water is vital during road constructions and efforts should be made to mitigate the effects of erosion by increasing the resistant soil and making use of reports from experts to constructed roads .
The second resource person, Dr Chigozie Ezeonyejiaku, who lectured on “Road Infrastructure: Strategic Environmental Impact Assessment as a key step towards Ecosystem Sustainability “, explained, that not
engaging environmental impact assessment experts is one of the major causes of poor road infrastructure saying that it is a law which must be adhered to, saying that sustainability requires a collective efforts from all the sectors.
The pioneer chairman of the group, Engineer Chidi Obiudu in an address, said the theme of the conference ” sustainability of roads
infrastructure in Anambra State: impacts from soil gullibility and erosion”, is essential in achieving sustainability of road infrastructure, and stressed the need to
formulate national development strategies to address the challenges of decaying road infrastructure in the country.
The event featured induction of new members and presentation of certificates to participants.
