The Federal High Court Two, Awka, presided over by Justice Mohammed Abubakar, has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of an
octogenarian, Ifechukwu Ifekandu for failure to appear before it to answer charges preferred against him.
He is standing trial for alleged drug related offence in 2012.
Mr. Ifekandu, of Umuota Obosi in Idemili North Local government area, was allegedly caught in possession of one hundred and seventy grammes of cannabis sativa in October 2012 and the case has been ongoing till date.
According to his defence counsel, Chief Chinweuba Nduka, the accused was not in court owing to ill health as he was infected with brulj ulcer, hence his inability to appear in court for the second time since the case commenced in 2012.
The prosecuting counsel, Barrister Patrick Eahua of the NDLEA, said the defense counsel failed to produce a doctors report to show his client is really sick or give a verifiable address of where he is receiving treatment hence the need for a bench warrant.
The case was later adjourned to twenty fourth of January 2019 for continuation of hearing.
The court also adjourned till the twenty-fourth day of January, 2019, the case between the Federal Republic of Nigeria and a fifty years old Nonso Chukwuelobe, also of Umuota Obosi who was allegedly caught in possession of forty four point eight grammes of heroin, an offense contrary to and punishable under section Nineteen of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act Cap N 30 laws of the Federation of Nigeria,
2004.
The counsel for the accused blamed the NDLEA of doing a shoddy investigation while the NDLEA accused the defense of a plan to cover up.
