Anambra State Government has carried out sanitization of the state, by removing virtually all beggars off the streets of Awka, the Anambra State capital to special centres.
Commissioner for Women and Children Affairs, Mrs. Ndidi Mezue, said the raid was carried out in line with the directive of Governor Willie Obiano.
According to the Governor, this is to facilitate the creation of decent and enabling environment for Ndi Anambra to enjoy yuletide.
The Commissioner in the company of some social workers from the Ministry, raided the Amawbia Roundabout, Awka and Upper Iweka flyover, Onitsha, where those claiming to be physically challenged were found in great numbers.
While carrying out the exercise, Mrs. Mezue surprisingly found out that most of the women beggars who had all along been claiming to be blind were merely pretending as they indeed had their sights intact.
She urged Ndi Anambra to beware of the people they offer alms, as many parading the streets were mere pretenders; they belonged to syndicates living off begging.
The Commissioner, however, noted that those caught during the raid would be handed over to the police for further investigation, after
which they would be moved back to their various states.
