Distribution of relief materials to two hundred and fifty flood affected households in the State has commenced.
The Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Engineer Yinusa Maihaja and Governor Willie Obiano, performed the symbolic distribution exercise at the Ogbaru Local government Area Headquarters, Atani.
Bags of rice, garri, sugar, beans, groundnut oil, beverages, tomatoes, salt, among other relief
materials were on ground for onward distribution.
Governor Obiano represented by the Secretary to the State government, Professor Solo Chukwulobelu, while appreciating the federal government for its timely intervention, revealed that the State government has
already expended with over two hundred million naira in the ongoing relief procurement.
He emphasized that though the flood may have come and gone, the consequences
are still manifesting, adding that efforts are ongoing to document losses encountered for the next phase of intervention.
The Director of NEMA, Engineer Maihaja stressed that the flood is a wakeup call for proper environmental planning and management.
He added that the distribution exercise is a fulfillment of government’s commitment to the welfare of its citizens, and appreciated Governor Obiano led administration for its efforts to the welfare of the State citizenry.
The Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency, Chief Paul Odenigbo, represented by the Executive Assistant to the Governor on SEMA, Chief Emeka Obinwa, identified local governments
affected to include Anambra East, West, Ayamelum, parts of Awka North and Ogbaru.
While appreciating Federal and State governments’ succour to the people, he explained that a total number of eighteen thousand, one hundred and forty- four people were displaced and sheltered in holding centers, and a total number of thirteen deaths were recorded.
Earlier the Chairman of Ogbaru Local Government Area, Mr. Arinze Awogu who pointed out that twenty three births were recorded, adding that about sixteen Communities in the Council were submerged in the seven weeks flood, urging relevant agencies to look into people affected by
flood beyond food.
Some of the beneficiaries applauded the exercise calling for measures to mitigate effects of flood in the future.
