Governor Willie Obiano has flagged off the Second Round of the 2018 Maternal Newborn and Child Health Week in Ukwulu, Dunukofia Local Government Area.
The event which attracted pregnant women, nursing mothers, children, caregivers, government officials among others was held at Ukwulu Primary Health Centre.
Flagging off the exercise, Governor Obiano represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. John Ndibe said that
effective and affordable health care system remains paramount to the mission and vision of his administration and explained that his
government established the Anambra State Primary Health Care Development Agency to bring primary health under one roof for
efficiency, notingĀ that his administration has equally renovated and equipped sixty primary health centres across the state for optimal
performance.
Governor Obiano called on mothers, pregnant women and caregivers to bring their children and wards out throughout the exercise in order to access all the services the week will afford them which he said comes with no cost and explained that he will continue to accord priority to the health needs of Ndi Anambra.
The wife of the governor, Chief Mrs Ebelechukwu Obiano represented by the Executive Secretary, Anambra State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr. Chioma Ezenyimulu said that the week aims to contribute towards improving the health status of Nigerian women and children by
increasing coverage of key maternal, newborn and Child health interventions by fifty percent of the current indices by 2020.
Mrs. Obiano revealed that the interventions that will be given during the week includes nutrition screening, Mid Upper Arm Circumference, Vitamin A supplementation, Birth registration, family planning, distribution of long lasting insecticidal treated nets, deworming, health education, sensitization on key household practices among other
life saving interventions.
The President General, Ukwulu Town Union, Chief Walter Okafor eulogised Governor Obiano for his sterling performance in all sectors of the state economy and urged women, pregnant mothers and caregivers
to utilize the week to benefit from the services it renders.
Cultural dance by women and children, distribution of the long lasting insecticidal
treated nets, health talks on family planning and nutrition added glamour to the exercise.
