Motorists and other road users have been charged to always abide by road safety measures.
The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Dr Boboye Oyeyemi, gave the charge during the 2018 Zonal Stakeholders Workshop on the implementation of Nigeria Road Safety Strategy, 2014-2018.
The workshop organized by the Ministry of Budget and National Planning in collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps, took place in Awka.
Dr Oyeyemi who was represented by the Deputy Corps’ Marshal, Hafiz Mohammed, while speaking on the role of the state government in Nigeria Road Safety Strategy, called for total conduct of road safety audit and safety impact assessment, and enactment of laws prohibiting dumping of refuse on roads and streets.
He also spoke on the promotion of mass transit system amongst the three tiers of government as well as ensuring removal of Markets, Motor parks and other man-made obstructions from the highways.
He maintained that to ensure successful implementation of the Nigeria Road Safety Strategy, adequate planning, proper implementation and due monitoring need to be adopted.
Declaring the workshop open, Governor Willie Obiano, who was represented by the Commissioner for Transport, Chief Uchenna Okafor, noted that Road Traffic Management Agency and Road Safety Corps are important agents in road traffic excellence, especially in Anambra State which is the gateway to other States.
Contributing, the Enugu State Commissioner for Transport, Mr. Vitus Okechi, represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mr. Idika Ogbonna, said that three essential factors that are needed to be worked upon to enhance a sustainable road traffic safety and security include the condition of vehicles, the road user and the road.
Also speaking, the State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Mr. Sunday Ajayi stressed the need for motorists and other road users to always adhere strictly to safety standards in order to minimize accidents on the highways.
Representatives from various Ministries, Departments and Agencies in the Southeast as well as the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Mr. C-Don Adinuba, amongst others attended the workshop, which also featured an interactive session.
