State government says it will not relent in riding the Onitsha Industrial Harbour Layout of nuisance and illegal activities.
The Chairman Anambra State Physical Planning Board, Barrister Chike Maduekwe stated this when he issued a final warning to illegal occupants of the area to move to designated parks as government has finalized plans to enforce sanctions.
When the ABS arrived the Onitsha Industrial Harbor Layout, several articulated vehicle’s were parked on the road as shanties are gradually springing up, despite government’s warnings and actions to sanitize the area by providing Mega parks for vehicles at Nkpor and Owerri Road , Onitsha.
Expressing his displeasure over what he described as continued nuisance in the area, Barrister Maduekwe said that State government under Governor Obiano, made it categorically clear that the harbour is not a park, stressing that the place is planned by State government as an industrial layout to accommodate industries around the area.
Barrister Maduekwe noted that residents of the area have reported incidents of clandestine activities that are gradually returning to the area, especially in the night, including polluting the entire place with human waste and indecent living, and the attendant vices.
Barrister Maduekwe warned that State government will not tolerate the return of criminals in the State who are likely to use the area as a hiding place, as the Obiano administration is committed to making the State safe for the majority of the State citizenry.
The General Manager Communications of one of the Industries, Sir Oseloka Offoh regretted that Industries around the area are gradually relocating, asking government to take drastic step towards addressing the ugly act.
A Resident of the area, Mr Francis Ogbuokiri said that they are now afraid to come out, especially in the night for fear of being waylaid or molested, alleging that Indian hemp, tramadol and other harmful drugs are sold in the area, which he regretted fuels the bad life style going on in the area.
ABS also got some drivers who spoke off camera, who claimed that they pay five thousand naira to some individuals to be able to park at the Industria Harbour.
