“Women’s Right are Human Rights”, this was the theme of the media event and symposium organized by the Women Aid Collective in partnership with the Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ, Anambra State Council to mark the 2018 Human Rights Day and Seventieth Anniversary of the declaration of Human Rights.

Speaking at the event held at the NUJ Press Center Awka, the State NUJ Council President, Comrade Emmaunel Ifesinachi, reiterated that the NUJ has the duty of informing and educating the people.

He announced that the NUJ is partnering an international NGO that focuses on human rights, peace advocacy and conflict resolution to ensure that people of Anambra are fully aware of their fundamental human rights.

The founder of the NGO, Professor Joy Ezeilo, pointed out that the theme of this year’s Human Rights Day as formulated by the United Nations is “Stand Up for Human Rights”, stating that it is a
joint celebration to mark the sixteen days of activism to end gender based violence.

Profesor Ezeilo who is the Dean Faculty of Law at the University of Nigeria Nssukka, hailed the Nigerian government for upholding human rights at international and regional levels.

She used the occasion to call on law enforcement agencies to prevent violence and intimidation against women candidates as the electioneering campaign builds up.
