The Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development in collaboration with the United Nations Women has organized a one day awareness on the need for strong and increased women participation in politics.
The organizer of the programme, and the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajia Aisha Abubakar, represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mrs Ifeoma Anigbogu, said the Ministry understands the role of women in national politics, and expressed regret
over the country’s downturn in female gender political representations.
In her address, the Wife of the State Governor, Dr Ebelechukwu Obiano, who was represented by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Social Re-orientation, Dr Michelle Onugbolu, said the Obiano administration has remained gender sensitive as demonstrated in his
conscious efforts in upholding forty-five percent Affirmative Action,
One of the keynote speakers at the event; an International Training Coordinator from a South African based management firm, Mr Ekpotu Emmanuel called for equitable social, cultural and financial initiatives that will suit women who aspire for public offices, noting that the South Eastern part of the country has always been blazing the trail in women political representation and consciousness.
Some of the participants at the worksho including the APGA State Woman Leader,
Lady Chinyere Ibenta and Mrs. Obioma Obidiegwu, implored women to be
the protagonists of their own political freedom.
