A primary six pupil of Immaculate Conception Nursery and Primary School Onitsha Master Giovanni Okagbue, has won the maiden edition of Arinze Oranye Mathematics Scholarship Award.
He won the scholarship after beating other entrants in a highly competitive written examination.
The scholarship was instituted by an Anambra indigene from Onitsha, and United Kingdom based Mathematics teacher, Mr. Arinze Oranye.
Mr. Oranye, Author of several Mathematics books, said the Scholarship Award is for primary and secondary school students in Onitsha.
According to him, the aim is to empower Onitsha children in primary and secondary schools with the necessary tools required for adaptations in their future encounters.
Mr. Oranye said he was particularly elated when he learnt that the maiden winner had lost his father recently, thereby leaving his young mother, a widow to face challenges of taking care of the
family.
He said young Giovanni’s education will be taken care of, for five years.
On what motivated him to institute the scholarship award, Mr. Arinze said, he believes it is time for them to give back to their respective communities, no matter how small.
Little Master Okagbue received the sum of One Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira, an ACER Chromebook 11, five signed maths-texbooks authored by Mr. Oranye, a medal, a certificate and a trophy.
He will in addition, receive monetary incentives every year for five years to help his education.
His school also received one hundred copies of mathematics workbooks authored by Mr. Oranye.
Among the dignitaries present at the scholarship award event is the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe.
