A retired civil servant Sir Tony Obi from Oraifite in Ekwusigo Local Government Area is demanding for Justice following the brutalization of his son ,Mr Chukwuemeka Obi by an officer of the Department of State Security Service, DSS, Anambra State on the 31st December, 2018.
Addressing the press in Awka on the incident, Sir Obi who was the former Chairman of Ekwusigo local Government Area, narrated how he sent his younger son, Mr Chuka Obi, a postgraduate student of Chukwuemeka Odimmegwu Ojukwu University to buy tiles, sand and cement for some repair work in their house, but got a call from him that he was apprehended by the operatives of DSS at Amenyi, Awka.
According to him he proceeded to the DSS office and discovered that his son Chukwuemeka was handcuffed, stripped naked and was horsewhipped countlessly on his back while his wife, Helen, who tried to intervene was dragged out of the premises.
Sir Tony said when he sought to know the offence committed by his sons, the DSS Director ,Yusuf Ishaku told him that the younger son, Chuka was tracked with a number which was used to collect ransom while the elder son, Chukwuemeka was flogged because he tried to obstruct their investigation though they later found out that the number belonged to a Tiler .
Sir Tony who stated that his family has good track record lamented that his sons were given a brutal treatment by a system that was supposed to protect them, requested that the officer in question should be brought to book.
Narrating his ordeal in the hands of the DSS officer, Mr Chukwuemeka Obi, an administrative Officer at UNIZIK, Awka, said when his brother put a call across to him on that fateful day, he went to the point where his younger brother was apprehended and found out that the officer in question did not have any identity which prompted him to ask relevant questions that made the officer ,who go by the name Paul to flare up and along the line ordered for his arrest together with his younger brother.
Mr. Chukwuemeka said he was horsewhipped countlessly with bruises, and was made to stood under the Sun for hours after which he was asked to write a statement, without knowing what his offences were .
Relaying her experience, Wife of Sir Tony, Barrister Mrs. Helen Obi, also a Lecturer at Law faculty ,UNIZIK, and the mother of the victim, who said she witnessed the incident, said the DSS officer Paul after the torture, called her to his office and told her that her son was flogged because he tried to obstruct their investigation.
Barrister Obi who is also the State Commissioner, Girl Guilds, recalled that the bill against violence has been passed by the Anambra State House of Assembly which has also been assented to by the
Governor, called on relevant agencies to bring the said officer to book.
When contacted, the DSS State Director, Mr. Yusuf Ishaku said he will only react when they are done with administrative investigations.
