The European Union and United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund, in collaboration with the State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency, RUWASSA, have organized a three day Water Sanitation and Hygiene Clinic in the fifteen wards across Anambra East Local Government Area.

The Clinic, which took place at Otuocha, was to review the progress and challenges as well as proffer solution to problems in the implementation of portable water supply projects, achieving Open Defecation Free and Sanitation Sector Reform programmes in addition to enhancing their sustainability in the area.

The programme had in attendance, representatives from all the communities in Anambra East Local Government Area, WASH representatives and other concerned stakeholders.

Speaking at the event, the Programme Manager of RUWASSA, Mr Victor Ezekwo, said that the essence of the clinic was to get the support of all the communities in Anambra East Local Government Area, identify their successes and failures in achieving Open Defecation Free status , and advised the people of the area to continue to strive towards set goals in the Local Government for a healthier environment for themselves and state at large.

Briefing the participants on how to maintain personal, domestic and community hygiene, the state WASH Consultant, Mr Clement Chigbo and his Anambra East Local Government Area counterpart, Mrs Amina Ominyi, disclosed that most diseases people suffer from are caused by poor hygiene and sanitation, urging the public to imbibe the culture of cleanliness to promote healthy living.

The WASH Coordinator, Anambra East Local Government Area, Mrs Helen Offor, commended members of Water and Sanitation Hygiene Committee, for spearheading the construction of toilets in various communities in the area and encouraged the participants to keep spreading the message of effective sanitation to all and sundry.

Some of the participants including Messrs Orjiako Itemba, Cyril Nnamekwe and Emmanuel Ogugua, commended UNICEF for the initiative which they noted has widened their knowledge, and promised to educate family and community members on what they had learnt.
