The Institute for Media Society in partnership with the European Union today, Monday, January 28, 2019 held a one-day capacity building training for staff of Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS) News and Programmes departments.
The interactive media workshop was organized by the Institute for Media and Society, IMS, with sponsorship by the European Union, as part of its Support Programme for Democratic Governance in Nigeria. The workshop focused on gathering and reporting news stories related to children, women and people living with disabilities.
The participants discussed extensively reportorial challenges such as objectivity and adequately representing the voices of underrepresented groups in the society, as the elections draw near.
The workshop facilitator, a Consultant for the IMS, and an Associate Professor of Mass Communication, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Doctor Ifeoma Duru, spoke of media’s huge responsibility in reporting subjects and persons that are perceived to be under-reported, including women, children, youths and people living with disabilities.
Dr. Dunu argued that neglecting these vulnerable persons in the news process nullifies the significance and essence of news, and advocated professional reorientation, change of paradigm and prioritizing reportorial topics.
Earlier while inaugurating the workshop, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the ABS, Chief Uche Nworah, said the programme was prompt, in view of emerging global journalism trends, and applauded the IMS and the European Union for bringing the training to the doorstep of the establishment.
