Hygiene related practices of the girl child during menstruation are of considerable importance as it has a health vulnerability to reproductive tract infections if not properly managed.

This was the position of health experts during girl child sanitary education organized by Rotary Club of Onitsha metropolis for female students of Demonstration Secondary School, Onitsha.

According to Mrs. Mary Jane, a Mid-wife working with Nwafor Orizu College of Education Nsugbe, vital message of correct menstrual hygiene to the girl child will correct several misconceptions and
practices which sometimes result to adverse health outcome.

She therefore advised the female students to always use a clean menstrual management material during their menstrual cycle just as she called on the government and corporate organizations to assist in subsidizing the price of sanitary pads to make it affordable to all.

On her part, the Head, Department of Pharmaceutical and Medical Chemistry, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Dr. Mrs. Chika Abba, who spoke on cervical cancer prevention and awareness urged the students to go for immunization and screening as well as abstain from premarital sex to stay safe stressing that it can be prevented and called on parents to guide their children properly.

The President Rotary Club of Onitsha Metropolis, Barrister Ifeanyi Onwuanyi said that their goal is to disseminate information on female sanitary cycle and to distribute sanitary pads to the students addingthat the spirit of Rotary is that of humanitarianism

The Health Teacher of the School, Mrs. lfeoma Ezeani as well as the students thanked Rotary Club of Onitsha for the sanitary education which they said gave them in-depth knowledge of personal hygiene.

The students also use the opportunity to ask question based on menstrual cycle.
