The President Rotary Club of Awka-Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Mrs
Ifeoma Obi has canvassed for increased cancer awareness and screening
among the populace especially in the rural areas where they have
little or no knowledge or facilities for early detection of cancer.
Speaking during the 2019 World Cancer Day celebration in Awka, Mrs Obi
who is also the Station Manager of UNIZIK FM said many people have
died because they were not diagnosed early and due to lack of
effective treatment facilities in the country.
She regretted the large number of people who die from cancer annually
noting that about one third of cancer related deaths are due to
preventable risk factors such as overweight, low fruit and vegetable
intake, lack of physical activity, tobacco and alcohol intake
Mrs Obi who called on Nigerians to imbibe a healthy lifestyle urged
the government and private sector to intensify efforts to reduce the
sufferings of people battling with cancer.
