At least seventy-two people have died and several others fallen sick after drinking illegally brewed liquor containing toxic methanol in several villages in northern India.

About sixty-four deaths were reported from Saharanpur and Haridwar, adjoining districts of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand states respectively.

Eight more deaths were reported in another tragedy blamed on tainted liquor in Kushinagar district, also in Uttar Pradesh.

The majority of the deaths were reported from the village of Balpur in Uttarakhand as authorities launched a crackdown and suspended police and officials.
