The UN said air attacks killed one hundred and forty-nine people and wounded more than two hundred other civilians in the first half of 2018.

Air raids in Afghanistan’s southern Helmand province recently, killed twenty-one civilians, including women and children.

Mohammad Hashim Alkozai, a senator from Helmand, said thirteen civilians were killed in one air raid and eight in another.

Both were carried out late on Friday in the Sangin district, where heavy fighting is under way between NATO-backed Afghan forces and the Taliban.

Mr. Alkozai said he has raised concerns about civilian casualties in parliament and with government officials, but they have taken no action.

The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) expressed its strong concern at the rising number of civilian casualties from air attacks in 2018.

It said aerial bombardment killed one hundred and forty-nine people and wounded more than two hundred other civilians in the first half of 2018, up fifty-two percent from the same period last year.

The figure accounted for roughly seven percent of total civilian casualties for the six-month period.
