Today, Nigerians go out to cast their votes in the rescheduled Presidential and National Assembly elections.
ABS Correspondent David Okpokwasili, in this report examines the build-up to today’s polls.
Todays Presidential and National Assembly elections are coming on the heels of palpable fears and disenchantment due to the postponement of the February 16th initial date with high expectations by the electorate on the conduct of violence-free, fair and credible elections.
The abrupt postponement of the polls less than six hours to the opening of the polling booths was blamed by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, through its Chairman, Professor Yakubu Mamood, on logistical challenges.
Nigerians would be choosing from seventy-two political parties that fielded candidates in an election that has more than ninety one political parties gunning for different political positions.
Looking at the statistics released by INEC, over seventy-two million Nigerians who collected their permanent voter cards out of the over eighty- four million registered voters are expected to vote today.
Many analysts are, however, optimistic that the voting and post voting activities will register a peaceful atmosphere in spite of major negative and pessimistic indices.
