Right Honourable Barrister Rita Obianamma Maduagwu joined active politics in 2010 with the mission to impact positively on the lives of her people. By the grace of God, the “Speaking Speaker”, as she is fondly addressed, has done well as a lawmaker and the head of the state legislature.
Honourable Maduagwu was elected first, as the member representing Nnewi South Two constituency in the fifth State House of Assembly. She was the House Committee Chairman on Education during which a lot of transformations took place in the state’s education sector. She championed the course of renaming the Anambra State University to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University and the employment of more teachers to rural areas among others.
Barrister Maduagwu equally attracted many infrastructural projects to her constituency. She renovated Saint Mary’s Central School in Afor Ukpor; renovated a classroom block at Ukpor Boys and reconstructed the abandoned borehole in the school. She renovated a hostel at Ukpor Girls and Okekenwa Primary School as well as a perimeter fencing in Akwaihedi Community Secondary School.
Others are construction of a new classroom block at Umunuko Umume Migrant School, Ukpor; construction of a modern market and a borehole at Ebenator as well as a Health Centre at Ezinifite. She attracted the construction of Afor Ukpor-Umunuko-Mputu-Amihe-Ozubulu road; the Afor Ukpor-Ukpor Girls-Onusorogu road and was instrumental to the conversion of Ebe Community Secondary School to a government approved school with posting of qualified teachers and other staff. She also did many empowerment programs.
In view of these good deeds in her first tenure, the people of Nnewi South Two constituency reelected her for a second term. Later, Barrister Maduagwu was elected as the Speaker of the sixth state Assembly. She has also done a lot in her constituency in the present second term. She has facilitated the employment of over thirty teachers from the constituency as well as other numerous employments of her constituents in the state judiciary, ministry of health and the state civil service.
She renovated and fenced Umudike Central School Ukpor; attracted two hundred and fifty-two poles of street lights as well as 200 KVA generators to power the street lights in Ukpor. She also attracted the construction of the Umungwu-Umudiji-Ezinifite road among others.
Again, under Barrister Maduagwu, the sixth State Assembly has maintained cordial relationship with both the Judiciary and Executive arms of government. She has superintended over the enactment of seventy laws and resolutions. Prominent among the bills is the “Anambra State Vigilante/Security Bill.”
Bills on Housing Development Corporation; Health Insurance Scheme, Appropriations, Waste Management Authority; Establishment of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku, Awka and Anambra State Polytechnic, Mgbakwu among others were passed by the present legislature. Recently, the House passed the Disability Rights Bill.
Thus, Ndi Nnewi South two constituency have beckoned on her to continue to represent the constituency in the state House of Assembly. Since Barrister Rita Maduagwu has harkened to the call of her people, the prayer of all should be that the will of God should prevail.
