The wife of Governor of Anambra State and founder of the NGO, Caring Family Enhancement Initiative (CAFÉ), Dr. Mrs. Ebelechukwu Obiano (Osodieme) has said that her goal is to groom economically self-reliant women who are able to make positive contributions for the growth and progress of the family and the community.
She stated this on Wednesday, 15th March 2019, during a presentation titled: Choosing Social Structures to Maximize Empowerment and Happiness of Women and Girls with a sub-theme; Local/Community Empowerment of Disabled and Indigent Populations at the United Nations’ Commission on Status of Women (CSW) 63 Side Event organized by the Worldwide Organization for Women (WOW) at Drew Room, Church Center for Nations, New York, USA.
Mrs Obiano who was represented by Anambra State Commissioner for Women and Children Affairs, Lady Ndidi Mezue said that she dedicated the platform of her NGO, CAFE to actualize the objectives. She explained that CAFÉ is a vehicle for the promoting well-being of the total family hence is at the vanguard of boosting the confidence of women, indigent widows and the physically challenged, stressing that “when you empower a woman, you improve the fortunes of the family and the community.”
According to Mrs Obiano, “When women and the girl-child are trained and empowered they become economically self-reliant; their self-confidence and self-esteem is boosted and with better quality of life, they are no longer seen as burden on the family but rather contributes to family upkeep.”
“This is why CAFÉ assists and empowers the physically challenged, indigent persons (particularly women, widows) and the less privileged in local/communities in Anambra State Nigeria.” She stated.
She highlighted the CAFÉ initiatives of providing over 4,400 women with training and new skills, and empowerment free-of-charge in the following areas: Tailoring and Fashion design, Soap making, Bakery and Confectionery, Hair dressing and Beauty Therapy, and Interior Decoration, Telephone and Computer repairs, Community Health Assistant Services as one way of encouraging their financial independence.
She commended the collaboration between CAFÉ and Ministry of Women and Children Affairs in Anambra State which has seen the successful implementation programmes like the treatment and rehabilitation of mentally challenged persons and other deliberate interventions like the grant of soft loans for micro business ventures which she observed, have incrementally helped in the financial inclusion women.
The well-received presentation drew applause and questions on the need for shared cross-cultural experiences with possible collaboration with other NGOs, donors and philanthropists.
In the audience were Member Representing Idemmili North Constituency in Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon Nkolika Mmegbuanaeze, President Worldwide Organization for Women, Nicholeen Peck; President WO Africa, Mrs. Carol Ugochukwu, some members of the New York Diplomatic community, promoters of women groups, and international NGOs; and some members of the Nigerian delegation to CSW63.
