Anambra State House of Assembly Committee on Public Accounts has directed the authorities of Ekwusigo local Government Area to furnish it with all the documents that will enable it verify its 2017 audited account in its next meeting.
The Committee gave the directive when the Local Government Authority appeared before it to defend the projects it executed in 2017 and its financial transactions for the year under review.
The 1999 Constitution as amended, empowers State Houses of Assembly to oversight the Local Governments to ensure transparency and due process in its activities.
It is on this basis that the Anambra State House of Assembly Committee on Public Accounts is verifying the audited account of the twenty one local government areas of the State for the year 2017.
However, the Committee expressed disappointment with the manner the Ekwusigo Local Government presented its financial records before it.
It therefore directed it to put its records straight when they will meet again in to avoid sanctions.
The Chairman of the Committee, Mr Charles Ezeani made it clear that the exercise was not intended to witch-hunt anybody but to encourage accountability and transparency in the local government system.
On his part, the Transition Committee Chairman for Ekwusigo Local Government Area, Mr Austin Enendu assured that they would make a wonderful presentation in their next meeting with the committee.
