Participants in this year’s World Meteorology Day celebration at the Department of Geography and Meteorology, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, have called for concerted effort towards finding lasting solutions to the negative impacts of human activities on climate change.

According to them unwholesome human activities have resulted in adverse consequences which must be urgently addressed in the interest of humanity.

A guest speaker from the University of Port Harcourt, Professor Joel Umeuduji, noted with dissatisfaction that activities of human remain largely unregulated on the flood plain thereby posing great danger to humanity.

He recommended the study and mapping of floodplains as well as intensive periodic sensitization of the citizenry as part of solutions to the problem.

The Dean Faculty of Environmental Sciences Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Professor Cliff Nwanna, charged the students of the Department of Geography and Meteorology to take maximum advantage of the event to deepen their knowledge.

Other guests including the Permanent Secretyary, Ministry of Environment, Dr Emma Okafor and representative of the Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr Chinedu Okonkwo, pledged to partner the University in mitigating the negative effects of climate change on their activities.

In a remark, the Head Department of Geography and Meteorology Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Dr Emma Ezenwaji, who traced the history of World Meteorological Organization maintained that the body was established to oversee the World climate, its changing pattern and effects on man.

Describing the theme for this year’s World Meteorology Day celebration which is the “Sun, the Earth and Weather” as apt considering the pivotal role of the three in providing home for Man on Earth.

The University teacher who maintained that the Sun delivers all the needed energy that sustain live on Earth equally drives the rotation on Earth on its axis as well as its revolution on its orbit.

He called on the Anambra State Ministries of Environment and Agriculture to partner with the Department of Geography and Meteorology of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, in using the Camp-bell automated weather stations installed in the institution for modeling and general research work.
