Anambra State Government and World Bank have presented take off funds for the construction of a three kilometer feeder road at Umumbo, Ayamelum, and a teachers’ quarter at Umueze-Anam, Anambra West Council Area.
The cheques, presented through the Anambra State Community and Social Development Agency, ASCDA, totaling more than four million naira is to start off both the road and Teachers’ Quarter projects expected to gulp over seventeen million naira, with subsequent fifty percent and twenty percent disbursements to be made once the utility of the first grant is fully met.
On successful completion of the seven point nine-four million naira feeder road project at Umumbo and the seven point four million naira Teachers’ Quarter at Umueze-Anam, the second phase of the programme, which is the renovation and equipping of the Umubo Community Health
Center, worth over one point six million and building of stalls at Umueze-Anam Community Market worth over two million naira will commence.
As it is with the programme’s implementation guideline, the benefiting community is expected to contribute a counterpart funding of ten percent while the government and donor body will provide ninety percent
Presenting the cheques to each of the two communities, the General Manager of the ASCDA, Mr Chudi Mojekwu, said the benefiting communities were chosen from the Anambra State’s Poverty Map, with those who were first to indicate interest benefiting from the first phase of the program which will accommodate ten communities.
He said the ten percent counterpart funding from the benefiting communities is to encourage them to take ownership of the projects , warning them to put the funds into absolute use or have the contracts revoked.
The traditional ruler of Umumbo, Igwe Simeon Chidubem, and Acting President General of Umueze-Anam Community, Mr. Ameke Chinwuba, said the communities chose the projects based on their immediate infrastructural needs, and thanked the Anambra State Government and World Bank for the timely intervention.
Speaking at each of the two communities, the Community Project Management Chairman of Umueze-Anam community, Chief Vincent Okafor and that of Umumbo, Chief Peter Okoye, said apart from ensuring that every penny of the money is put into the projects, they will ensure that the projects achieve the desired results.
The ASCDA team and the community leaders also made inspection stops at the sites of the proposed projects where works will commence on each of them next week.
Umumbo and Umueze-Anam are the fourth beneficiary out of the ten communities selected as beneficiaries of the program.
