Anambra state Commissioner for Agriculture, Mechanization, Processing and Export, Mr. Afam Mbanefo, has said that the state has potentials to export vegetables because of the enabling environment and support provided by the state government for export activities.

The Commissioner, who disclosed this while playing host to the Pumpkin Growers and Marketers Association of Nigeria, PUGMAN, during a courtesy call in his office In Awka, stated that the state
government has provided three cooling trucks for vegetable haulage, sensitized vegetable farmers and developed linkages with off takers in order to support vegetable activities in the state.

Mr. Mbanefo, further stated that the state has established tuber conditioning center for yam export adding that his Ministry has been supporting farmers in the state to grow organically by constant training on best agronomic practices so as to meet international standards.

While welcoming the Association, Mr. Mbanefo promised to designate a desk officer for pumpkin and vegetable activities for a better collaboration with the team.

Earlier, the National President of PUGMAN, Engineer Uche Ihuagba, commended the state for taking the lead in vegetable production in the country and requested collaboration with the Ministry in order to encourage grassroots production.

He expressed happiness that the state is promoting organic production and supporting farmers to grow organically, pointing out that the Association has observed that value addition for pumpkin is
profitable.
