The enthusiasm of state residents in physical fitness has continued to increase since the introduction of the Anambra State Walk for Life exercise.
The April edition is the sixth covered fifteen kilometers and kicked off from the Amawbia Flyover through Enugwu-Agidi, to Nawgu, Ukwulu and terminated at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, COOU, Igbariam.
Men of Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra OCHA Brigade, Anambra Transport Management Agency ATMA, Anambra State Daily Road Sweepers assisted in controlling traffic during the exercise.
The fifteen Kilometers road walk was to enhance healthy living among the people.
This month’s edition was led by the state Commissioner for Works, Engineer Marcel Ifijiofor alongside the Vice Chancellor, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojokwu University, Professor Gregory Nwakaobi and other government officials including the Principal Secretary to the Governor Sir Willie Nwokoye, Commissioner for Youths Entrepreneurship and Creative Economy Mr Bonaventure Enemali, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor Mr James Ezeh and the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the ABS, Chief Uche Nworah, among others.
Speaking shortly after the walk, some sports men in the state including Mr Ngozika Ekwelum who is a former Heavy Weight African Boxing Champion , Arthur Egbuna who is a former member of Ranger International and former Nigeria’s number one Goalkeeper, Mr Emmanuel Okala, reemphasized the importance of exercise in human life as they said that a healthy body is a healthy mind, commending the state government for the initiative.
In their separate speeches the Vice Chancellor of COOU, Professor Nwakaobi, the Registrar of the Institution Dr. Ngozi Ezeibe and Professor Paschal Onyi-Ogunu who is also of COOU, said that the
walk is refreshing and important towards enhancing the physical well-being of the people, noting that it will trigger greater productivity in all sectors of life.
In their separate reactions the Principal Secretary Sir Willie, ABS CEO Chief Nworah and Reverend Ekene Osu expressed satisfaction for being part of the fifteen Kilometer walk, noting that the impact of the walk in connecting and harnnessing like minds in sports.
The State Chairman of Sports Development Commission, Mr Tony Oli appreciated all who participated in the exercise, expressing optimism that the Commission will continue to initiate more programmes that uplift the lives of the people.
