The Managing Director, Anambra State Waste Management Authority (ASWAMA), Mr Amechi Akorah has urged Anambra residents to avoid burning of waste materials, or bushes in their areas to avoid endangering lives and properties.
Speaking with newsmen in Awka, Mr Akaorah pointed out that burning of wastes materials was an offence against the law.
Mr Akaorah said the Agency has sustained mass awareness against bush fires and burning of waste materials because they are against the law.
He explained that ASWAMA Law of 2015 stipulates that offences such as doing anything that will threaten the environment or constitute blockage of drainage systems are punishable.
The Director stressed that residents should imbibe the right attitude toward waste disposal, noting that the Agency had ensured that waste bins were placed in various locations to enhance waste collection.
Mr Akorah, condemned the attitude of throwing refuse in drainage channels, noting that the agency would sanction anyone caught in the act and enjoined all, to bag their wastes properly and dispose in waste bins for onward evacuation by the agency in order to maintain clean and healthy environment.
